Twenty beings will greet you larger-than-life-sized along the Shankill Road. They are part of the public exhibition Becoming Pet, celebrating all life in this area in Belfast, Northern-Ireland. The pet exhibition was a colorful, quirky and caring attribution to the street, as a gift, as an act of care and celebration.
Shankill residents were asked to send in photos of their pets, which received a huge response. A selection of 18 pets was exhibit large size along the main street. The other hundred of pets were exhibit in an online Pet archive.
There are many people and animals living around the wider Shankill. Some of them are pet-caregivers and some are human-caregivers. We as humans carry the affection for pets and see them as if they were our children. The pets give us humans something to take care of. And they also take care of us —a wagging tail when you come home, a warm and loyal friend that’s always there, a pal for life. The line between caregiver and caretaker is often blurred. We live together, in symbiosis. Maybe… we become pets.
